Known throughout the United States as some of the finest ethnic performers of Germanic music and Octoberfest entertainment are the Stratton Mountain Boys. This fine group was formed at Stratton Mountain, Vermont where the band members are also ski instructors in the wintertime. Stefan Schernthaner is the business manager, booking agent and bandleader. Stefan joined the group in 1970 and has been bandleader since 1975. Stefan is originally from Maria Alm in Austria. He plays Trumpet, Trombone, Alphorn, Bells and Singing Saw. In the 30 years of Stratton Mountain Boys history there have been approximately 40 Austrian Musicians participating in the legend of the Stratton Mountain Boys. The existing members are pleased to keep the tradition alive. They continuously offer excellent entertainment throughout the USA every summer. In five months they drive over 40,000 miles to appear in front of thousands of people. They have been on various radio broadcasts and television shows, such as CNN Headline News, PM Magazine, Captain Kangaroo Show, Epcot Center, Milwaukee Summerfest and many more. The haunting sounds of four alphorns, the happy yodeling songs, the traditional shoe slapping dances and their lively spirited Polka music, delight their guests and bring happiness to everyone. The Zombie Crawl: Raise the Dead for Dollars is a community zombie night and a fundraiser for the HUB-BUB Artists-in-Residence upcoming community art projects, including classes with the Boys and Girls Club of the Upstate, a Summer Art Show in winter, an Invitational Exhibit in January, and the Rungish Towers Project, a community art installation. Activities include Zombie Workshop 101, RIP (The Reanimated Individuals Parade) and the Dance Til You Die (Again) Party. Spartan Photo Center is sponsoring its first high school photography contest with the entries now on display at the Chapman Cultural Center.
There are more than 60 photographs from students throughout Upstate South Carolina in the exhibit. The public is encouraged to see the exhibit and to vote for their favorite photos.
The winner will be awarded a Diana Film Camera and many other great prizes from the sponsors, including Spartan Photo Center, Zaxby’s, Jostens, The Coffee Bar, and Converse Deli.
The exhibit is on the second floor of the West Wing Building and is open for free public viewing Monday through Saturday, 10 a.m. -5 p.m.
The deadline to vote is July 11 at 5 p.m. Spartan Photo Center will also host two more photography contests this year for different age groups and levels of experience.
The top three winning photos from each of the contests will be published in a calendar available for purchase. The proceeds from the sales will be given to The Haven, a shelter for the homeless in Spartanburg.

John Byrum will exhibit his work at the Artists’ Guild of Spartanburg’s gallery at the Chapman Cultural Center during July 2011.
He opens his free exhibit on July 1 with a public reception, 6-9 p.m. The exhibit will be open for public viewing Monday through Saturday, 10 a.m.-5 p.m. until the end of the month.
Byrum is a self-taught photographer and native of Spartanburg. He has worked professionally as a photographer for 15 years, 11 of which have been with Spartanburg’s daily newspaper, the Herald-Journal.
Aside from his photojournalism, he has exhibited twice before in Spartanburg in connection with the monthly ArtWalk program.

The book follows his story from the humble beginnings of not knowing the slightest bit about backpacking to becoming an accomplished hiker.
Cannon currently lives in Fort Mills, SC, with his wife Katie, and he works for the Federal Aviation Administration at the Charlotte airport.

In conjunction with the exhibit now on display in the AT&T Exhibition Hall, Carroll Foster will present a program on lighting for photographs.
Whether you are a novice photographer or a seasoned veteran, you’ll learn practical tips on how to make your subjects more visible with these lighting techniques. After the program, stop by to see the photos on display.
The exhibition, “Lasting Light: 125 Years of Grand Canyon Photography” is created by the Grand Canyon Association and organized for travel by the Smithsonian Traveling Exhibition Service (SITES).

Debuting in 2007, The Backstabbers have over 50 years of combined playing experience. Based out of Spartanburg, Greenville, and Simpsonville, the band has become a recognized live band in the upstate.
Showman personality, irrepressible enthusiasm and raw talent help make the band a visual as well as an audible experience.
Furman University’s Music by the Lake Summer Concert Series

A variety of musical genres will be featured including Big Band, jazz, international, contemporary, bluegrass, marches and orchestral favorites.
Ensembles and bands performing this summer will include the Carolina Youth Symphony, nief-norf percussion ensemble, Swing Shift Combo, Greenville Chorale, Greenville Brass Quintet, The Andy Carlson Band, S.C. Suzuki Institute Fiddlers and The Greenville Textile Band.
The Lakeside Concert Band will perform at five of the concerts.

The SC Arts Commission has one of the most extensive state-level art collections in the nation. This exhibit focuses on South Carolina artists and their art since the mid-1980s.
It is a wide and diverse collection of 2- and 3-D pieces, showing the depth of talent found in the Palmetto State.

The Spartanburg Regional History Museum Celebrates Its 50th Birthday!!! This exhibit celebrates 50 years of preserving and presenting Spartanburg County’s history.
This temporary exhibit features artifacts contributed to the Museum 50 years ago for its opening in May 1961.
Some of these early contributions are also in our permanent exhibit and are highlighted throughout the Museum.
