Patients who join dance classes say it helps to loosen tight joints, improve overall movement, and lift spirits. April 13 Byna Concert: Life Songs of a Southern Appalachian Woman of Cherokee Descent, 7:30pm
We will continue our exploration the intersections of high and low culture Friday evening with a performance of the song cycle Byna: Lifesongs of a Southern Appalachian Woman of Cherokee Descent, scored for soprano, oboe, cello, and piano. Byna was written by composer Rudy Davenport and lyricist Delilah Elsen and premiered at the Porter Center of Brevard College in the fall of 2005. Its fifteen songs depict the Southern Appalachian woman Byna looking back on her life in the mountains and offer up a window into the culture in which she was raised. Though Byna is a fictional character, she is loosely based on Davenport’s and Elsen’s grandmother, and the song cycle is a reworking of Elsen’s play of the same title. Megan Kusek, Converse ’12, will interview Delilah Elsen, while Rebecca Turner, soprano; Kelly Vanemen, oboist; Kenneth Law, cellist; and Mildred Roche, pianist will perform.

Green Screen 2012: WASTE LAND
April 17th at 7pm (doors open at 6:30)
Filmed over nearly three years, WASTE LAND follows renowned artist Vik Muniz as he journeys from his home base in Brooklyn to his native Brazil and the world’s largest garbage dump, Jardim Gramacho, located on the outskirts of Rio de Janeiro. There he photographs an eclectic band of “catadores”—self-designated pickers of recyclable materials. Muniz’s initial objective was to “paint” the catadores with garbage. However, his collaboration with these inspiring characters as they recreate photographic images of themselves out of garbage reveals both the dignity and despair of the catadores as they begin to re-imagine their lives. Director Lucy Walker and co-directors João Jardim and Karen Harley have great access to the entire process and, in the end, offer stirring evidence of the transformative power of art and the alchemy of the human spirit. wastelandmovie.com

Howard’s on Main in Greenwood
Born and raised in S.C. I find the southern landscape fascinating with no end to beautiful and interesting subjects to be found. From the ocean to the mountains and all that is in between I begin by taking my own photographs. Over the years I have acquired hundreds of wonderful images from which to paint. The difficulty for me is in narrowing my choice to begin a painting.
I work only in water media with a preference for watercolors and I have no formal training. My inspiration for watercolors began in the late 1970’s at the Greenville Museum of Art with their large collection of Andrew Wyeth paintings and more recently a travelling show by Mary Whyte has fueled the flame for me artistically. Watercolor is indeed an amazing medium and I plan to continue exploring the medium. I have a studio in my home but find it a challenge to stay indoors when I can be outside in my garden.

February 21st, Rereadings: Revisiting Words we Love. This reading is about relationships, the relationships we have with books we read when we were young, or with the words we wrote to ourselves in our diaries. Surely, we were formed in part by our love for these words, from Anne of Green Gables to Goodnight, Moon, from diary entries on first crushes to letters from penpals in faraway states. So bring these words and share them. You’ll have up to ten minutes to read; just come a little early to sign up. Say something about what you’ll read, or let the words speak for themselves. Inspired by Anne Fadiman and her book Rereadings: Seventeen writers revisit books they love.
February 23rd Hub City Book Club. Join us for a lively discussion of our next book club pick: Glaciers, a novel by Alexis M. Smith. https://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=316560225027254
Empty Bowls is an international grassroots effort to fight hunger. The basic premise is simple: potters and others work with their community to create handcrafted bowls. Guests are invited to a simple meal of soup and bread. In exchange for a cash donation, guests are asked to keep a bowl as a reminder of all the empty bowls in the world. The money raised is donated to an organization working to end hunger and food insecurity. Between now and December 1, the Spartanburg community will be making hundreds of pottery bowls which will be fired and glazed by volunteers just in time to be filled with soup from local restaurants during a downtown event on January 26, 2012 at Indigo Hall (190A-Ezell Street) from 11am-7pm.
The bowls will be sold to benefit Total Ministries; an organization that provides basic needs to assist families in Spartanburg County who are facing a financial crisis. http://www.totalministries.org/
