Cost: $4 Adults, $3 Sr. Citizens & Vets, $2 Ages 6-17

This exhibit examines how typical family lifestyles in Spartanburg were reflected in their selection of furniture. Historically, Spartanburg has had many farmers, mill owners and everything in between and the furniture in their homes can convey many things about their preferences, means and lifestyle. Furniture can be purely functional or purely aesthetic, but is often a combination of the two. When studied together, the furniture of a home can tell a story. The Regional Museum has a large collection of Southern furniture and this exhibit highlights the importance of these artifacts in the history of our area.

With the great success of the college student contest earlier in the year they discovered quickly that many people were eager to show off their impressive skills and passion. Spartan Photo ended up with nearly 100 entries for the public’s viewing and voting pleasure.
All photos have been displayed in the second floor Stairway Gallery of the Chapman Cultural Center (open Monday through Saturday, 10 a.m.-5 p.m.) on East Saint John Street in downtown Spartanburg, directly across the street from Spartan Photo Center and is open to the public for voting. Every person is free to choose their top ten favorites (there is a form and voting box in the gallery) and the top ten will be further voted on by the online Facebook crowd with the winners to be announced in December 2011.
Pack a lunch, grab the kids, and enjoy a picnic at Barnett Park, voting on the photos and visiting the various exhibits at the Cultural Center, and stop by Spartan Photo Center for a free cup of coffee and some good conversation. We are excited to meet you. Spartan Photo Center, Inc. has been expertly supplying photographers in the Spartanburg/Greenville area with new product information, the newest techniques, repairs, accessories, upgrades, and photo printing for over 25 years. Athol Fugard’s MASTER HAROLD… AND THE BOYS
Continues through November 6th
South Carolina Governor’s School for the Arts and Humanities- Sakas Theatre in Greenville
https://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=162141027212886
Written in 1982 by South African playwright Athol Fugard, this part auto-biographical play is a chronicle of Fugard’s youth in Port Elizabeth, South Africa, during the height of the anti-apartheid movement. The play centers on three characters and their complex relationship that is redefined in a single afternoon. During a rainy day in his family’s St. George’s Park Tea Room, 17-year-old Hally spends the afternoon with the tea room’s employees, Sam and Willie. The three are a “family” in a sense, as Sam and Willie helped raise Hally due to his absent alcoholic father. Upon hearing of his tyrannical father’s return home, Hally’s anger pushes him to reevaluate his natural bond with these two men and society’s expectation of racial divide. During the play, Sam and Willie’s description of a ballroom dance competition, described as a “world without collisions,” works as a metaphor for equality; an idea that is sadly slipping out of their grasp. The performance is free to the public, but a reservation is strongly encouraged. RESERVE UP TO FOUR SEATS BY CALLING 864-282-3737. Walk-ups are accepted.

November 5th: Talk20
What is talk20? A night when you can talk about anything you want. A night where you may learn about anything and everything. We’ve had everything from the 10 year renovation of someone’s house told through the eyes of their dog, to how to build an experimental airplane, to the 20 works of art that changed someone’s life, to the story of someone’s life through their fave articles of clothing, to the history of punk rock, and on and on. It is not a lecture but a gathering, an informal exchange of ideas within and without our community. Here’s the catch: you get to show 20 slides with images only, and speak for only 20 seconds per slide (a total of a little over 6 minutes). The slides are on a timer, so the format is quite rigorous. To view images of folks from previous events, you can go to: www.flickr.com…

It’s been less than a year since the Ghosts arrived on the Austin, TX scene, and they’ve quickly charmed their way into the hearts and minds of a town steeped in timeless American music, and not always quick to shower praise.

The hugely popular Charlotte, North Carolina band 5th and York is stirring up the urban smooth jazz landscape with their newly released CD called Nascentum. The group’s saxophonist and co-founder Derwin Friday is the jazzy core of group who has been playing in different Top 40, R&B, and cover bands with bassist Dewarren Tate for over ten years; Friday’s cousin, guitarist Derrick Friday, is a rocker who adds powerful electricity to their infectious melodies and driving grooves. Keyboardist and musical director George Mason is a renowned musician in several different genres of music including gospel and hip-hop. Drummer Johnny Gillard lays down the rhythmic foundation for the band and is a contemporary jazz natural who is coveted by many bands throughout the area for his uncanny ability to, as Derwin says, “keep time like a human metronome”, and lead vocalist Tra Sauls, has shared the stage with various gospel and R&B stars, including Glen Jones and Genuine. 5th and York - named after a street corner on the outskirts of Charlotte - is bringing fresh new sounds to the music scene as each member brings a unique style, background and musical ingenuity to the mix. A mix so popular that they are regularly asked to open for legendary artists like Frankie Beverly & Maze, Earth, Wind & Fire, Chicago, and R&B greats Anthony Hamilton and the late Gerald Levert. Listen to 5th and York and in an instant you will understand why this sensational band is on the rise to their own legendary status.
