U.S. Postal Service: Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive
May 11th
For the past 21 years, the United States Postal Service has been the driving force behind the world’s largest single day food drive. In total the Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive has collected more than 1.2 billion pounds of food. Letter carriers will collect non-perishable food while they deliver mail. All the food collected stay in local shelters and pantries.

Not Eric Brace & Peter Cooper. After releasing two duo albums that drew praise from a bevy of critics and colleagues, Brace and Cooper went away. They wandered across the U.S. and Europe to headline shows and to tour with luminaries including John Prine, Nanci Griffith, and Todd Snider. And they took a harrowing trip into the world of children’s music, earning a Grammy nomination (“nomination” is code for “they lost”) for producing I Love: Tom T. Hall’s Songs of Fox Hollow, a star-packed album that featured Hall, Patty Griffin, Buddy Miller, Bobby Bare, Duane Eddy, Jim Lauderdale, and many more.
Now, three years after their last adult-oriented (but not in an R-rated kind of way) release, Brace & Cooper return with The Comeback Album, a sparkling set that marries nine self-penned compositions with gems from Tom T. Hall, Karl Straub, and David Halley.
The Comeback Album features scenes from a Johnson City jail, a Spartanburg slum, and the back ends of a few busted love affairs. It’s populated by fools, sages, tattooed sailors, victims and perpetrators, and for listeners, it’s a chance to come back and hear one of Americana music’s most intriguing and inventive acts.

Ron Rash is the author of three prize-winning novels: One Foot in Eden, Saints at the River, and The World Made Straight; three collections of poems; and two collections of stories. A recipient of the O. Henry Prize, he holds the John Parris Chair in Appalachian Studies at Western Carolina University.
Drawing on storytelling traditions as old as Southern literature itself, Grit Lit is the first anthology devoted to contemporary writing about the Rough South. In this workshop, Helen will discuss nature journaling, including writing and drawing in nature, at Hatcher Garden. She will show different approaches to journaling through sharing some of her own journal entries. Part lecture and part drawing, students should bring a journal and pen to use during the class. Let Helen guide you down the different paths of nature journaling and start you on your own path to knowing the world around you.
Helen Correll is a freelance writer, illustrator, and photographer from Spartanburg, South Carolina. She is a member of the Society of Children’s Writers and Illustrators and the Guild of Natural Science Illustrators. She has published articles and illustrations in numerous magazines. The author of Middlewood Journal: Drawing Inspiration from Nature, she keeps a blog by the same name.

Several Upstate cities are holding Marches for Babies Saturday April 27th. It’s not too late to register to walk in support of the March of Dimes organization. March for Babies will take place rain or shine.
The March of Dimes organization raises money on behalf of premature babies. The money raised supports programs in your community that help moms have healthy, full-term pregnancies. It also funds research to find answers to problems that affect infants. The organization has held marches annually since 1970 and has raised $2 billion to benefit babies.

While spoken word and slam poetry are often personified through bohemian mantras of idealistic expectations of the world, a Johnny C. Weaver and Sapient Soul experience are an electrifying duo that presents real life experiences, raw and uncut with an encouraging twist.
Johnny C. Weaver is a hip-hop artist and poet from Spartanburg, SC. He’s been performing since the age of twelve. He’s also an actor and activist who combines love and life with political and social commentary in each poem. He is the winner of several poetry slams and is currently ranked 7th amongst over 200 slam poets in the Southeast. Johnny C. Weaver is releasing “2*,” his first poetry album.
Marlanda Dekine, aka Sapient Soul, previously known on stage as Marlanda Verné, is the 2012 Queen of the South. She is a former counterpart of The Annointed Tongues, a spoken word duo. Marlanda is also the founder and visionary for Furman University’s poetry club, Poetic Noise. She has led several poetry workshops and is the CEO and Founder of iCreate Healing LLC, an organization bridging the expressive arts and overall well-being for all populations. Sapient Soul is releashing her second poetry and hip-hop album, SOULidifying Borrowed Concepts.
Together, Johnny C. Weaver and Sapient Soul are “a Johnny C. Weaver & Sapient Soul experience”. They are the founders of Slam Madness, a poetry slam tournament that operates in the manner of the NCAA March Madness tournament every year in March. Next year will be the 4th Annual Slam Madness event.

The Spartanburg Regional Classic is a closed-circuit, multi-lap cycling race. It will be a featured event in Spartanburg’s largest annual festival, Spring Fling. In addition, it will be included in the USA CRITS Speed Week series, which is guaranteed to draw top national racing teams and international racers.
The race has an officially sanctioned, half-mile course that is unique for its cobblestone start/finish line, open-air plaza center, and dangerously sharp right turns. It is one of many cycling activities held in May as part of National Bike Month and part of the Bike Town Spartanburg Initiative.

This 35-year old Spartanburg tradition offers something for everyone. Festival goers can look forward to a professional bicycle race, lots of great shopping in the arts and crafts marketplace, savory food, tons of family-friendly activities, classic cars, an extensive lineup of great entertainment, and a whole lot in between. How do tropical farmers think about, handle, and respond to fire? What is the role of fire in the coevolution of self, society, and environment? In the compelling narratives that make up this ethnography, the lives of Kodi women, men, and children unfold within an island landscape that has been shaped by 14,000 years of anthropogenic fires and 300,000 years of natural fires. Please join author Cissy Fowler for a reception to celebrate the release of her new book, Ignition Stories: Indigenous Fire Ecology in the Indo-Australian Monsoon Zone. Fowler is an associate professor of sociology at Wofford College.
Ignition Stories connects the Kodi people who design fires with their living kin and their ancient ancestors, then links them to nearby communities in neighboring hamlets, to other ethno-linguistic groups across Sumba, and to far-flung multiethnic, virtual coalitions. In this book, Fowler searches through Kodi people’s mundane fire management practices as well as the shared beliefs, myths, rituals, and arts of this Papuan-Austronesian culture and the intimate emotions of individual members of the community to explain the unique character of people and landscape in the Indo-Australian monsoon zone.
This book is part of the Ritual Studies Monograph Series, edited by Pamela J. Stewart and Andrew Strathern, Department of Anthropology, University of Pittsburgh.

The Expecting Goodness Short Film Festival is a writers’ film festival. Talented South Carolina writers and their recently-published or award-winning short stories are connected with emerging and experienced filmmakers across the state of South Carolina to create original 5-10 minute short films inspired by a chosen story over a four-month period. Our one-of-a-kind project brings literature and film together in a way that engages the larger community of our state and showcases the people and places that make South Carolina a creative hotbed.
The 2013 Expecting Goodness Short Film Festival was held on March 23, 2013 at the Chapman Cultural Center, featuring the twelve completed project films. Experience them all, and maybe meet a few of the filmmakers, at this rescreening of the twelve films at The Showroom at 7pm on Tuesday, April 16. Tickets are just $5. Please join us for a signing and presentation by Spartanburg’s own Michael Buffalo Smith, author of the new book, Prisoner of Southern Rock, the unlikely story of one Southern boy’s rise from near poverty to a respected Southern music historian, specializing in the sub-genre known as Southern Rock. The book traces Smith’s journey from his meager beginnings in upstate South Carolina to his work as a musician and journalist during his college years and his destined founding of the Southern rock magazine Gritz following a near-death experience from a chronic bacterial infection.

Rebecca McClanahan is an award-winning writer of poetry, fiction, and creative nonfiction. Her tenth book, The Tribal Knot, a multi-generational memoir, will be published this spring by Indiana University Press. She has also published five books of poetry and a suite of essays, The Riddle Song and Other Rememberings, winner of the Glasgow prize in nonfiction. Her three books of writing instruction include Word Painting: A Guide to Writing More Descriptively, which is used as a text in numerous writing programs.

Carl Planksy, artist, teacher & paint maker, maintained studios in Brooklyn and East Meredith, New York and Budapest, Hungary. Born in Miami Beach, Carl studied at Maryland Institute College of Art and moved to New York in 1970 to attend Hans Hofmann’s New York Studio School.
Plansky’s paintings are drawn from direct observation, and revel in pitch-perfect color, compositional elegance, and highly expressive brushwork. Plansky’s paintings are included in many public and private collections around the world.

SAFE Homes - Rape Crisis Coalition, Children’s Advocacy Center and the Hope Center for Children are working together on the Rock the Denim Campaign. This Awareness/Fundraising Event will coincide with Sexual Assault Awareness Month and Denim Day USA.

13,000 plastic eggs plus 1,500 children equals one great morning of family fun! Children from toddlers to 10 years of age come together for the largest Easter egg hunt in the upstate! Here’s how it works: children are divided into four age groups, toddler-3 years, 4-5 years, 6-7 years, and 8-10 years, and are led to their hunt areas by Spartanburg County Parks Department staff and volunteers. At the sound of a bullhorn the action begins! Everyone comes away with something, and the lucky children who find prize eggs collect an extra gift.

The Hub City Hog Fest will take place on March 22nd and March 23rd of 2013. The City of Spartanburg will block off several roads in the newly renovated downtown Grain District for the event to accommodate the many cook teams that we hope will compete in Spartanburg’s first BBQ Competition. We are looking forward to the buzz around this event growing and we want you to be a part of it all.
Spartanburg’s own RJ Rockers Brewery is also providing space for the event, and we are proud to have them as an important supporter of the Hub City Hog Fest. This event will include a BBQ competition, an awards ceremony for the winning “Que” , delicious food and drink from local vendors (Friday and Saturday) and great live music (one band Friday night and a number of bands throughout the day Saturday).

Ballet Spartanburg: Parkinson’s Dance Class – 4th Thursday

Dance therapy uses movement and music to treat social, emotional, cognitive, and physical problems. Practiced in a variety of settings, dance therapy has been shown to help with everything from memory enhancement to movement rehabilitation, treating such neurological concern’s as Parkinson’s disease, autism, dementia and stroke. Patients who join dance classes say it helps to loosen tight joints, improve overall movement, and lift spirits. These classes use dance combinations and repetition with focus on grace and personal success. Certain movements work on specific problems that Parkinson’s patients have, like mobility freeze or doing two things at once. Ballet Spartanburg Artistic Director Carlos Agudelo participated in a Dance for Parkinson’s Disease Workshop sponsored by Mark Morris Dance Group and Brooklyn Parkinson Group in New York City. Ballet Spartanburg offers free dance classes for Parkinson’s patients on the second and fourth Thursday of every month at 1:30 p.m. in the ballet studios at the Chapman Cultural Center. The first class of each month is followed by the monthly meeting of the Spartanburg Parkinson’s Association.

13,000 plastic eggs plus 1,500 children equals one great morning of family fun! Children from toddlers to 10 years of age come together for the largest Easter egg hunt in the upstate! Here’s how it works: children are divided into four age groups, toddler-3 years, 4-5 years, 6-7 years, and 8-10 years, and are led to their hunt areas by Spartanburg County Parks Department staff and volunteers. At the sound of a bullhorn the action begins! Everyone comes away with something, and the lucky children who find prize eggs collect an extra gift.

The Green Boys are a four-piece band based out of Richmond, Virginia. Equally mislabeled as bluegrass, folk, or honky-tonk, the boys sometimes mention the idea of being a part of a “country-revival”. It’s a half-serious notion that nonetheless approaches the crux of the band’s complex sound. The Green Boys are led by brothers Sean and Ryan Green, each a songwriter coming from and delivering very different lyrical and melodic styles.

Carl Planksy, artist, teacher & paint maker, maintained studios in Brooklyn and East Meredith, New York and Budapest, Hungary. Born in Miami Beach, Carl studied at Maryland Institute College of Art and moved to New York in 1970 to attend Hans Hofmann’s New York Studio School.
Plansky’s paintings are drawn from direct observation, and revel in pitch-perfect color, compositional elegance, and highly expressive brushwork. Plansky’s paintings are included in many public and private collections around the world.

The Wofford Writers Series hosts Sandra Beasley, the author of I Was the Jukebox, winner of the Barnard Women Poets Prize, and Theories of Falling, winner of the New Issues Poetry Prize. Other honors for her work include selection for the 2010 Best American Poetry, the University of Mississippi Summer Poet in Residence position, and the Maureen Egen Exchange Award from Poets & Writers. Her most recent book is Don’t Kill the Birthday Girl: Tales from an Allergic Life, a memoir and cultural history of food allergy. She lives in Washington, DC; this spring she is in Hickory, NC, serving as the Visiting Writer at Lenoir-Rhyne University. This event is free.
Ballet Spartanburg: Parkinson’s Dance Class – 4th Thursday

Dance therapy uses movement and music to treat social, emotional, cognitive, and physical problems. Practiced in a variety of settings, dance therapy has been shown to help with everything from memory enhancement to movement rehabilitation, treating such neurological concern’s as Parkinson’s disease, autism, dementia and stroke. Patients who join dance classes say it helps to loosen tight joints, improve overall movement, and lift spirits. These classes use dance combinations and repetition with focus on grace and personal success. Certain movements work on specific problems that Parkinson’s patients have, like mobility freeze or doing two things at once. Ballet Spartanburg Artistic Director Carlos Agudelo participated in a Dance for Parkinson’s Disease Workshop sponsored by Mark Morris Dance Group and Brooklyn Parkinson Group in New York City. Ballet Spartanburg offers free dance classes for Parkinson’s patients on the second and fourth Thursday of every month at 1:30 p.m. in the ballet studios at the Chapman Cultural Center. The first class of each month is followed by the monthly meeting of the Spartanburg Parkinson’s Association.
LADY PARTS: A Collective Reading by Women

In honor of Women’s History Month, the Hub City Bookshop and Wofford College invite you to LADY PARTS, a collective reading by Spartanburg women, on Friday, March 15 from 7-9pm at the Hub City Bookshop.
Our 13 readers will each read for five minutes, either an original work or something they find inspiring/surprising/incredible/especially true about women: Kerry Ferguson, Michelle Fleming, Sarah Hager, Erin Haire, Ximena Herrera, Crystal Irby, Kari Jackson, Jenna Kessler, Kate McCarthy, OneLove, Nancy Williams, Lindsay Uhlinger, and Ana Maria Wiseman
It will be a night to reflect on women’s history, women’s rights, women’s place in society, and women’s awesomeness.There will be refreshments, and we’ll have some women-inspired giveaways. Eric Williams will be the artist featured in the lobby of GCT during the production run of “The Music Man.” Since retiring from Ninety Six Historic Site as chief ranger in 2009, he has been taking painting classes with Skip Shelton a resident artist at the Arts Center. Eric’s subject matter ranges from landscapes to portraits.

Please join us for a reading and discussion of the novel Trang Sen, by its author, Sarah-Ann Smith of Spartanburg.
In this book, war and loss dog the heels of her and her family, yet Trang Sen (her name means “White Lotus”), the Vietnamese heroine and title character of Sarah-Ann Smith’s new novel, is defiant. Rebellious and headstrong even as a child, she struggles to make more of her life than seems possible. As she moves from her parents’ rice farm to the streets and alleys of Saigon, her world opens up. But as new paths become visible, others are shut off. Caught between her own dreams and the needs of her family, between her love for learning and the excitement of war-time Saigon, Trang Sen embarks on a journey that requires heartbreaking choices.
Smith earned a degree in international relations at American University in Washington, and pursued a career with the U.S. diplomatic corps. Her tours of duty took her to Taiwan to study Mandarin Chinese and to the American Consulate in Hong Kong. She also worked at “Foggy Bottom,” the legendary headquarters of the U.S. State Department. Friendships with a number of Asian students piqued Smith’s interest in Southeast Asia; her fascination intensified as they voiced their critiques of U.S. policy at the height of the Vietnam War. Years of professional and personal focus on Asian political and cultural life impelled her to write about it in this, her first novel. Smith’s life after the Foreign Service has focused on writing and teaching. In addition to Trang Sen, she has published numerous essays and op-eds and has taught courses on China and Southeast Asia at universities in Maryland and North and South Carolina.

This exhibit examines how typical family lifestyles in Spartanburg were reflected in their selection of furniture. Historically, Spartanburg has had many farmers, mill owners and everything in between and the furniture in their homes can convey many things about their preferences, means and lifestyle. Furniture can be purely functional or purely aesthetic, but is often a combination of the two. When studied together, the furniture of a home can tell a story. The Regional Museum has a large collection of Southern furniture and this exhibit highlights the importance of these artifacts in the history of our area.
